Classes That Engage The Intellect

Breakfast Forum - Sunday's, 9:00am, Community Room

The 'Forum' offers a wide range of topics spanning theological, psychological, political and social topics concerning UU's. Speakers are from within the church and our local community present topics which are stimulating, informative and intellectual in nature.

Paganism 101: Fall, 2008. Room 212.

This course offers a basic understanding and overview of earth based religions and their practices. Led by members of our UUCLV's very own Covenant of UU Pagans (CUUPS), Joanna Herron and Maggie Donohue, this course will introduce and network with other individuals recognize their own religious identity among those of the earth based religions.

Owning Your Religious Past: Tuesday 7-9. Spring 2009. FM Kitchen.

A series of workshops providing tools to re-examine and retrieve positive aspects of one's religious experiences leading to one's continued growth. This course will enhance and deepen one's UU identity while simultaneously addressing and resolving the negative or limited elements of one's past religious associations.

Questions & Values: Tuesday 7-9 PM, Spring 2009. Room 212.

Using 6 CD lectures by Patrick Grim, PhD., as a source of discussion on the philosophical and intellectual history of human values, Dave Roper will facilitate dialogue that will deepen and ground one's ethical understanding of human nature.

Art, Spirit and Western Civilization: 4 Tuesdays in Spring 2009: 7-9 p.m. Community Room

Rocky will lead you on an informative journey through the spiritual and social forces that have shaped the art and architecture of the western world since prehistory. The class will feature slides, lectures, discussions and a field trip to an art Museum. Materials fee: $5.00

The Jesus Seminar on the Road: March, 2008. Time: TBA. Community Room

The Westar Institute brings scholars from the Jesus Seminar into conversation with interested people across North America and around the world. Designed to address significant issues in current biblical and theological research. The program usually consists of a Friday evening lecture as well as two presentations with discussion on Saturday. Groups That Strengthen Relationships

Men's Group: Monthly, 2nd Wednesday

Each potluck meeting is hosted by a different member of the Men's Group and the host chooses a topic for lively discussion. The monthly convivium is driven by fellowship and interaction with men who collectively hope to promote inclusivity and explore philosophical views in order to make the a difference in our community and the world. There is no prerequisite of membership to the UUCLV; any man is welcome to join. Contact: Larry Martin (larrymartin@rcn.com).

Soup, Bread and Politics: Monthly

Our UUCLV's own Activist Women's Group that seek to mutually support each other in their belief that spirituality can help overcome oppression. They gather monthly in each other's home to exchange political views and make plans to put their advocacy into action by writing letters to officials, participating in vigils, peaceful picketing and campaigning for officials that are in sync with their activist agenda.We laugh and cry together. We succeed; we fail, but mostly we care deeply about one another and the bringing to life the world we envision for ourselves and our families. Contact: Lilly Gioia, (lillygioia@aol.com).

Christian Fellowship: 3rd Sunday at 12:00pm. Room 212

The UUCF offers those who seek to integrate their Christian Heritage with the Principles of UUism and define what it means to be Christian in a UU context. This group offers study grounded in Old and New Testament theology, as well as dialogue on contemporary issues where Christian values conflict with those of UUism. Brown Bag Buddhist Exploration & Discussion Group: 2nd and 4th Thursdays. Room 212

Inspired by His Holiness the Dalai Lama's visit to Bethlehem, this group will engage three texts that offer commentary on the Great Treatise written by the La Rim Chen Mo: The Path of Bliss, The Path of Enlightenment and Kindness, Clarity and Insight., culminating in a Spring retreat to the Kadampa Meditation Center in New York.

Pizza and Games Night: Friday October 17 & January 16, 6:30—9:00 pm

Families are invited to come join us for pizza, fun and fellowship as we bring and share our favorite games in hopes to meet other UU families and strengthen the bonds of our community. This has always been a fun event for kids and adults alike. A donation is asked to cover the cost of the pizza. Contact: Tara Zrinski (dre@uuclvpa.org).

Movie Madness! Monthly, 4th Friday Evening

See listing in Spectator of UUCLVNEWS for exact movie title. Titles, genre and topic vary monthly, offering a wide variety of entertaining and intellectually intriguing films that engage the deepest reflection upon our UU Principles, values and world view. Workshops that Calm the Spirit

Breath Walking: Starting Select Saturdays, September 27- November 8th, 2008

Breathwalk is the science of combining specific patterns of breathing synchronized with your walking steps and enhanced with the art of directed, meditative attention. Breathwalk allows you get an effective walking workout at the same time you "Choose your mood" for your day or for a specific meeting, encounter or relationship. Join member, Maggie Spilner, certified breathwalk trainer, for a one hour introduction and 4 breathwalk sessions.

JPD Women & Religion Fall Retreat: October 17-19, Murray Grove Conference Center

Searching For the Goddess in Nature; Finding the Divine Within. During this experiential weekend, we will use song and movement, stillness and contemplation, storytelling, the labyrinth, altar-building and art-making to connect and deepen this vision. Led by Sarah Campbell, a community herbalist from Lancaster County, this event promises to bring participants closer to the earth and the interdependent web of life. INTRODUCTION TO MASSAGE: Saturday October 18 & 25, 2008. 2 Saturdays 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Community Room

This workshop is for those seeking to begin the study of massage either as a career or for fun. Participants will learn 21 basic massage strokes that they will both give and receive with other participants. Each workshop will begin with a guided grounding and connecting meditation at the start of each day. Students will learn contraindications and precautions to use with clients or partners as well as a few hand, wrist, and thumb stretches for self maintenance. $75 facilitation fee. Emotional Freedom Technique Workshop: Fall, DATE, TIME, 212. TBA

Taught by Henriette Alban, N.D., a Level II Advanced Practitioner and Doctor of Naturopathy, offers this 4 hour workshop on this incredibly powerful tool that is used to relieve the participant for both emotional and physical stress, and in some cases disease. Healing, Power and Community, Ostara's Drum Workshop. November, 2008, Room 304

Celebrate the power of drumming with Yodi, an African story teller and spiritual drummer. Experience the rhythm of healing, become attuned to your power, and enjoy magickal community. No previous drumming experience is needed. Drums will be provided, or you can bring your own. Presented By: Olori Beyodi "Yodi" Obono. $10 Materials fee.

Parenting Group: Saturday, April 4th, Room 304

In the format of a forum, parents will be introduced to various individuals of the community that can offer discussion and information concerning non-violent discussion, peaceful parenting, dealing with loss or divorce as well as various services offered in the area.
